My dad and my first autograph

My dad and my first autograph

When I was nine years old, my dad told me that one of my favorite baseball players was going to be signing autographs for fans at a local Safeway grocery store here in Stockton.

As a huge Oakland A's fan growing up, I couldn't have been more excited to meet one of my favorite players, Dave Henderson.

I dug into my baseball card collection, but couldn't find a card, but I did have an Oakland A's baseball. I had never met a sports player before, so I was really nervous.

"Don't be nervous, son," said my dad. "He's going to be excited to meet you."

"Really?"

"Really," he said.

When we got there, there was a line of people waiting to meet Hendu. It was raining heavily, but we ran inside the store and stood in a line of about 50 people who were lined up to see him.

Dad and I got in line and I anxiously waited my turn to meet a hero of mine.

We got to the front of the line and I walked up to him as he was seated just a foot away from me.

"Mr. Henderson... I'm very happy to meet you," I said as I handed him my baseball.

He laughed with this big gap-toothed smile and started signing my ball.

"I'm so happy you came over to meet me too," he said.

And the rest was history.... Thank you for coming to my site to share in the passion of sports.
